The Zip Code Database Projet
I found this project very useful. Basically they provide a free zip code list containing latitude and longitude, city and states in a csv text file. You can import this into your favorite database system do do lookups or distance calculations. There's sample code on their site for doing a distance calculation in Python and PHP. Most places you find on the web will charge $20-$30 for a similar text file, but this one is free. Better than munging through the US Census data...
Lotsa Helping Hands
When your family is in crisis, there are often many friends who want to help. Unfortunately, you might not be able to coordinate their efforts because of your crisis situation. Lotsa Helping Hands lets you specify a person to coordinate such efforts as meal delivery, childcare, rides and more. It gives that person an online support system with calendaring, reminders and more. If someone you care about is in such a situation, please check it out.

Kyocera 7135 Smart Phone Ring Tone Maker for OS X
I found this app posted on an internet message board. Since I had a Kyocera Smart Phone and used OS X at the time, I found it very useful. (I now have a Treo 650 and just use Ringo.)

It was originally created in July 2003 by Graham Booker. It is avaliable from the above site under an open source license. If you can't get it from the above site, you can get an archived version here.

Someone asked about how to actually sync the Kyo 7135 to OS X, but then didn't leave any contact info... Step 1 is to install the Palm desktop software that comes on the CD. (typically Palm Desktop 4). You can download the latest 4.1 version from PalmOne.com, but there isn't a Kyo 7135 phone listed on the site last I checked so it's hard to find the right version.

That software will allow you to sync the phone to the palm desktop program, but not anything else. If you want to sync it to Apple's AddressBook/iCal you need the Apple Conduit which isn't easy to find on Apple's site. It's in the sidebar of the main iSync download page.

If you use FirstClass for mail, you can also download conduits for it.

In general, the conduits on OS X can be found in /Library/Application Support/Palm HotSync/Conduits. You can only have one active per conduit type. For me, I use the Apple conduit for syncing contact info, FirstClass for To Do's, Memos and Calendars, and Palm Desktop for Backups.

I hope that helps.
